FLANDRIEN
Saturday March 16th, 12:00 PM
Seminar Room 125
2023 | DOCUMENTARY, SPORTS
Filmed on location, Flandrien tells the story of the Flanders region of Belgium. Rich in history, full of flavor and adventure, Flanders abounds with captivating visuals. Cycling is central to the lifestyle and culture of the area. From the onset, the question arises: What is a Flandrien? The journey strips away the layers to discover and understanding where, why, and within whom the Flandrien spirit lives. Along the way, the treasures, triumphs, and tragedies of Flanders are revealed. Flandrien shares insights from some of the cycling greats of Belgium and around the world who devoted their lives to a sport so ingrained in the culture it is inextricable. Directed by Paul Willerton and produced by Shane Cooper (Adventures of the Graveled High Rouleur, 2015, The Bottle Runner, 2017).
Produced with support from DeFeet International, Repreve®, Koers Museum of Cycle Racing, Cycling in Flanders, and the Flandrien Hotel.

In addition to the loss of human life, it is estimated that road injuries will cost the world economy $1.8 trillion from 2015–2030.
THE STREET PROJECT is the story about humanity’s relationship to the streets and the global citizen-led fight to make communities safer.
Digging deep into the root causes of traffic violence, the filmmakers engage a diverse array of experts including street historian Peter Norton, city planner Jeff Speck, and urban design expert Mikael Colville-Andersen. CROSS CHECKER’S BAWL
Saturday March 16th, 5:29PM
Meets up at Broad + Cherry Streets
Right after the PHILLY BIKE EXPO closes for the day.
A SHORT RIDE + TOAST TO THE MOST
AVERAGING BIKE EVER DESIGNED:
THE Surly CROSS CHECK, 2000-2023
The SURLY Cross Check frame was first offered in 1999, followed by a complete bike in 2000.
It was a sleeper hit from the start. At Trophy Bikes, we called the Cross Check, “The FENDER TELECASTER of bikes.” It wasn’t the best/most of anything, but a Cross Check was pretty good at practically everything.
Parent company QBP said CCs were still selling OK, but the push to make every bike use disc brakes to stop, and the success of SURLY’S Straggler (pretty much a disc Cross Check) led to the CROSS CHECK being discontinued in 2023, the longest run of any SURLY.
This here ride WINDS UP at the RAIL PARK (close to the start), where it HOOKS UP with the MAGNIFICENT @NIGHTCYCLE_PHL RIDE to KEYSTONE BIKES’ Expo Party. How boss is that?!
PLEEZ:
Ride your CROSS CHECK if you got one (look at Craigslist!), or ride your SURLY of any type.
Or jeez just ride a steel bike. Carbon fiber bikes may be subject to keying.
AND ALSO:
Helmet and lights, duh. BRING 4 quarters or a dollar bill for the prize pot!
A Trophy Bikes Suggestion.
