2021 PBE x SRAM Inclusivity Scholarship for Framebuilders: Caren Hartley
Meet Caren Hartley @isenworkshop Surrey, UK
Caren Hartley’s preparation for a career in framebuilding included classes at the Bicycle Academy as well as courses in brazing and machining at the Royal College of Art, London (where she earned Bachelors and Masters degrees in jewelry and metal arts). Caren gained on-the-job training at Saffron Frameworks, Rusby Cycles in addition to Hartley Cycles and ISEN Workshop. Over the past 7 years, Caren has built approximately 100 bikes.
ISEN Workshop’s focus is on designing smaller sized bikes so that smaller riders can have as good a riding experience as larger riders do.
“We make sure to only use real womxn and smaller riders in our promotional photos and as our ambassadors, both showing womxn at work in our workshop and also as riders and racers.” says Caren. “We try to have BAME people represented in our riding and promotional photos wherever possible.”
Caren gives presentations at schools and colleges and volunteers at London Bike Kitchen’s WaG (womxn and gendervariant) DIY Bike Maintenance Nights.
Caren is committed to showing smaller riders that cycling is for them too, and they can see themselves represented in the sport. “I have a lot of experience designing for smaller riders, so I understand well some of the problems and barriers to cycling they may face,“ she says. “Their experience of cycling is often so much poorer than their counterparts that fit larger sized bikes. Small bikes are often so poorly designed that the riding experience they give is challenging and sometimes terrifying, but because a smaller rider has often never experienced a bike that fits them, they think the problem is with them. This limits their ability to excel, limits their enjoyment of cycling and can mean they do not continue with a sport that has so many benefits.”
Caren tells us that receiving the scholarship will allow her to show her work in the USA and connect with a new audience and community.
Congratulations, Caren! Looking forward to seeing you in Philly! #phillybikeexpo #pbe2021 #pbexsraminclusivityscholarship
